DON’T stand there, do something.

Tips for Hogar Infantil Angelitos Felices –
Happy Little Angels Home for Children:
Hogar Infanitil Angelitos Felices
-
About:
Welcome to the orphanage and thank you for joining. My name is Hsuan. I am from Taiwan. Through the organization ICYE (International Culture Youth Exchange), I have been volunteering and living in this orphanage for 6 months, from 2009-2010.
The flowing are tips and suggestions to help you make the most of your time here – for the children and for yourself:
What to do:
#Education – during the school year
The children study at the public school, Juan Ramón Cueva. There are 2 class sessions: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders attend school from 7:00 AM–12:00 PM and 4th, 5th, and 6th graders from 12:00 PM -5:00 PM. Kindergarten classes are 8:00 AM-11:00 PM. This means that no matter what time of day you visit the orphanage kids will need help or encouragement to finish homework. Sometimes they have no homework from school or for some reason they did not go to school. In such cases, volunteers can create something for them to practice, either implicitly through games, or by creating Math exercises or drilling Spanish vocabulary.
Materials: Pen/pencil, eraser, paper
#Education – during vacation
From December to February, students in Honduras are on vacation. The kids play the whole day without homework from school. If volunteers visit during this time, it is productive to create some kind of class or review work for the children. This can include: (1) Spanish class to remind them of spelling and vocabulary; (2) Art/Painting class to stimulate creativity. The kids like drawing very much so it does not need to include in-depth instruction; (3) Math class to practice numbers, depending on the child’s age and maturity, or practice math problems that are appropriate for grade level; (4) Games that help to develop meaningful skills or relationships.
Materials: pen/pencil, crayons/markers/colored pencils, scissors, eraser, paper
NOTE:To encourage kids to pay attention during more structured tutoring, you can bring small gifts like stickers and balloons. This is a helpful motivation tool. Please do not use candy or sweets to motivate children in order to help reinforce good nutrition habits.
#Health
Basic hygiene practices need to be reinforced. It is also necessary to check kids’ fingernails, teeth or skin for wounds, skin diseases, or other maladies. If necessary, next time you visit bring medicine. Medicine is easily obtained without a prescription from any pharmacy.
1) Do not take pictures with kids – it is important to make the children feel dignified. Do not make them feel like an animal in the zoo.
2) Do not donate money or other items to this orphanage. It is not appropriate for you to help the orphanage in this way.
3) Do not give children candles or extra toys. Every weekend, there are other groups visiting Hogar Infantil Angelitos Felices. These groups often throw parties or bring clothing and toys for kids. Your job is to mentor the children.
4) You can teach kids to speak politely, and to say PLEASE (por favor) and THANK YOU (gracias) at any opportunity.
5) You can teach kids not to litter. You’ll notice that throwing garbage on the ground is normal in Honduras – notice to the children that this may not be the best way to dispose of waste and SET AN EXAMPLE.
6) You can help to clean the orphanage grounds inside and outside.
7) You can bring fruit (bananas, watermelon, melon, mangos are plentiful in the market), but don’t leave fruit in the orphanage because the mothers will not give it to all the kids. It is better to bring fruit and hand it out yourself.
8)If possible, read to the children (in Spanish.) Enrique Carrillo is the director of the local Guacamaya language school and he is very good about letting volunteers at the children’s home borrow Spanish children’s books from his school to use at the home. Also, let the children read to you. It is great practice and a wonderful habit to develop.
9)Encourage sharing, whether the kids are reading books or playing with toys. The mothers at the home do not encourage this kind of positive behavior.
10)The more structured and organized the games the kids play, the better. Kids in orphanages and foster homes receive little structure in their lives, but this is a very important basis in their development.

Jacob Perry jacoboperry@gmail.com
